"SAN JOSE -- A state appeals court abruptly halted this week's scheduled sales of 11 state properties Monday, including the California Supreme Court and Public Utilities Commission headquarters in San Francisco, while it considers opponents' arguments that the deal is an illegal giveaway of taxpayer funds to private profiteers."

California chief justice gives his exit interview

"With just a month left in his tenure as California's chief justice, Ronald George huddled with the media one last time Wednesday, looking back on reforms to the state judiciary and problems with the death penalty system and looking forward to a life outside the courts -- and an upcoming trip to Antarctica.

George, who will be replaced in January by Tani Cantil-Sakauye, made it clear that he's ready to move on after 14 years as the state's most powerful judicial figure and more than three decades on the state bench."
